What Is Wayang?
In Javanese, the word "Wayang" means "shadow". If viewed from the meaning of philosophy, "Wayang" can be interpreted as a shadow or a reflection of the properties that exist from within the human soul. The characteristics in question are such as temperament, anger, virtue, greed, and so on. Wayang are played by a "Dalang"(puppeteer) who is assisted by several gamelan musicians and one or two Waranggana as vocalists. The function of the Dalang (mastermind) here is to set the course of the show as a whole. The Dalang leads all the components of the performance to melt in the storyline presented.
Wayang Variety
Regarding the type of Wayang's known by the Javanese people, it turns out there are several types of Wayang's, including; Wayang Kulit (Purwa), Wayang Klithik, Wayang Golek, Wayang Beber, Wayang Orang(Human) and Wayang Suket.
As the name implies, Wayang Kulit(Leather) are made of animal skin (such as: buffalo, ox, or goat). Wayang Kulit is used to demonstrate the plays or stories of Purwa Babad, namely Mahabharata and Ramayana. Therefore Wayang Kulit is also called the name Purwa Puppet. Until now the shadow puppet show, besides being a means of entertainment, is also one part of traditional ceremonies, such as: clean the village, Ruwatan and others.
Wayang Klithik is made of two-dimensional wood material (flat) which is almost close to the shape of Wayang Kulit. There are similarities between Wayang Klithik and Wayang Kulit, namely in the gamelan, vocalistlanguage used in dialogue, floor design, lighting equipment used in shows and others. Even so, we also encounter many differences.The wayang klithik show generally only functions as an ordinary spectacle which sometimes includes information from the government (for development education).
Wayang Golek
Same as Wayang Klithik, Wayang Golek is also made of wood. But Wayang Golek have three dimensions (like puppets). This Wayang Golek is more realist than Wayang Kulit and Wayang Klithik. Because, in addition to its shape resembling the shape of a human body, Wayang Golek is also equipped with costumes made of cloth.
Wayang Beber
Wayang Beber is a puppet art that emerged and developed in Java. It was named Wayang Beber because it was in the form of sheets (beberan) which were formed into characters in the wayang stories, both Mahabarata and Ramayana.
Wayang Orang(Human)
Wayang Orang is a form of embodiment of Wayang Kulit that is exhibited by humans.So this puppet art is a reflection of Wayang Kulit. The difference is, these puppets(Human) can move and have their own dialogue.As in Wayang Kulit, the play that is usually performed in Wayang Orang is also sourced from the Babad Purwa namely Mahabarata and Ramayana. Puppet Arts People who live today basically consist of two schools, namely the Surakarta style and the Yogyakarta style.The difference between the two streams is mainly in the intonation of dialogue, tan, and costume.Dialogues in the Surakarta-style Wayang Orang are more realistic in accordance with the level of emotion and atmosphere that occurs, and the intonation varies somewhat.In the Wayang, the Yogyakarta style dialogue is distorted in such a way and has a monotonous pattern.Almost all Wayang Orang groups are found using Surakarta style dialogue.
Wayang Suket
Wayang Suket is an imitation form of various puppet figures made of grass (Javanese: suket). Puppet suket is usually made as a tool for playing or delivering puppet stories to children in Javanese villages.
To make it, some grass leaves are woven together and arranged (by folding) to form a figure similar to wayang kulit. Because of the ingredients, the puppet suket usually doesn't last long.
